![]() | Alan B. Miller Business Leader Russian 1998 Recipient Alan B. Miller founded Universal Health Services, Inc., the third largest proprietary hospital management company in the nation in 1978. Now in its 20th year of operation, Universal Health is operating 72 acute care, behavioral health, ambulatory surgery and radiation oncology treatment centers in 21 states and Puerto Rico, with revenues of approximately $1.8 billion dollars. An authority on hospital management and development, Mr. Miller served as health care advisor to the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. He has formulated positions on health care policy which have affected national legislation, and speaks often at health care and business seminars. Prior to the founding of UHS, Mr. Miller served as chairman and President of American Medicorp (NYSE) from 1973-1978. Mr. Miller also founded an industry mutual insurance company, H.U.G. Ltd., to provide malpractice insurance to over 200 hospitals. Mr. Miller served as its first chairman. In 1986 he organized a real estate trust (UHT-NYSE) to own healthcare properties. Initially Universal Health Realty Income Trust secured ten UHS hospital properties by exchanging its new securities for UHS common stock and debentures. It now has approximately $160 million in assets. The REIT is managed by UHS and Mr. Miller serves as its Chairman. Its shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol UHT. Prior to joining Medicorp, Mr. Miller spent eight years in the advertising industry, the last five before entering health care, at Young and Rubicam, Inc. in New York, one of the world’s premier advertising agencies. He is a graduate of the College of William and Mary in Virginia and earned his MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he now serves on its Executive Board. He holds an honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree from The University of South Carolina. He served as a trustee of the William & Mary Endowment Fund, is a life member of the school’s President’s Council, and served on two advisory boards at The University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Miller is President of the Opera Company of Philadelphia and Chairman of The UNCF- College Fund Campaign in Pennsylvania. He serves as a director of CDI, Inc., (NYSE), Genesis Health Venture, (NYSE), and the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company. He is a recipient of the Industry Award of the Federation of American Health Systems and the Americanism Award of A.D.L. He won the Entrepreneur of the Year award in 1991 and was named CEO of the year in Hospital Management in 1992, Outstanding 100 CEO’s in 1995 and 1996 by Financial World Magazine. Mr. Miller served in the U.S. Army and attained the rank of Captain as a member of the 77th Infantry Division. Mr Miller is married. He and his wife Jill have a son Marc, and two daughters, Marni and Abby. They reside in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia.
